Urban Yogis was founded by Ullasini Khwan in 2006 in New York City. Having a daily yoga practice and also an urban person, Khwan was inspired to create a yoga clothing line that served her lifestyle on and off the mat. So, she began designing her personal favorite clothing to wear to her yoga classes. She worked closely with screen printers, artists, and designers to refine her ideas and designs. Khwan went on to create an entire menswear line as well. The business aspect manifested with the help and support of Manhattan yogis who loved yoga. Khwan and the Urban Yogis were living a unique lifestyle in an urban environment while practicing and following the principles of yoga. Hence the name – Urban Yogis – made perfect sense. It embodies our business because we create products and clothing, and offer education to support yogis who live a modern, urban lifestyle—because the products can be worn on the mat, in a café, lounging around, and out and about.
From 2006 to 2008 Khwan was the primary chief operator and visionary of the business. In 2008, after her marriage to Anthony Biduck, the business took on a new dimension. With little background in business and working solely from the heart, Anthony, a scholar, teacher, and yogi, added an educational component to the business. He also began working closely with Green America to make Urban Yogis a green business. With his natural ability to educate and connect with others, Anthony made the business not only educational and eco-friendly, but also more approachable.
Currently, the both of them together—as one—each with their uniqueness and strength continue to grow, create and nourish the business in the direction that not only benefits individuals from all over the world, but also the environment as well. The success and growth of the company derives mainly from their commitment to following the principles of yoga.
